We were running a Bed&Breakfast (guest house) and an elderly couple had booked in for a week for their son’s wedding. Church-going and square, they’d been emailing us for ages in preparation for their stay and their requirements. They met my partner Sharon on their first day and the next morning they saw me walking through the breakfast room. The woman looked me up and down and as I left the room she asked Sharon who that person was. Sharon’s heart braced itself. She replied that that was her female partner. The woman turned to her husband and said: “See, I told you!” Sharon was feeling really uncomfortable thinking ‘here it comes’. The woman then turned to her and said: “My daughter is a lesbian and she booked in town because she thought that she would not be welcome in a B&B in the middle of nowhere like yours. If we’d known, she could have booked in with us here!”
